  1. What was the story about?

The story was about the boxer and money. He had to fight to make money. He loved his wife and you could tell that because when he held her hand, she squeezed his.

  2. The line that stood out to me from the story today was "The knowing that the gentleness would always be there, that through all the nights of pain to come, she would be there for him"(PG38). This line is compassionate about how Billy felt about Johnnie. This meant that he knew that above all the other stuff that happend in the past, she would always be there for him. You can tell by the way she said " I love you baby " and the way she squeezed his hand. She didnt squeeze it hard, she squeezed it "gently". I chose this line because it's romantic. Although Billy took a loss that night, he still managed to have what he cares for the most; his wife. That's the most sweetest thing ever :)!

  3. My favorite line form the story was when Billy and Vegas was fighting and I choose that because in that paragraph they show so much details and I can Picher it happening like when they said Billy had fainted and knock Vegas out and he was in a double vision meaning he saw to things at one time. And that’s true because if you was to get punched that hard that’s what you would be seeing. I also like that line because I can make a text to self-witch is a connection form when I see professionals box they get knocked out also. So that’s why I choose that to be my fravoit line and that happen on PG: 36 1st paragraph.

  4. " He closed his eyes and hoped he dream". that standed out o me bcause, he had something good going and he didn't want it to end.Or he did'nt want It to be unreal. I chose it because I was in a game that I loved and I didn't want the game to end. also I didn't want It to be a dream but It was.

  5. The line that I like the most in the chapeter Fighter is on the corner a guy played a saxophone, that sound sliding into the darkness and echoing off the bricks. It was to cold too be playing the saxophone but Billy guessed the guy was dealing with demons that needed to hear a tune. I dont know why I choosed this line but it was one of the lines that stuck out to me the most.

  6. "The kid who had bragged about getting a knockout skulked to the corner". What it means to me is that nothing in this life will always go the way you want it to. And when you go to far whith that one thing that your fated to fail you'll be wounded physicaly by getting brused, or emotionaly by loss of pride.

  8. “On alternate stations he tried to figure out what he had done wrong against vegas and then what he had done wrong in his life that had him sitting on a half empty train feeling like he is about to throw up”

To me this means he doesn’t really think before he makes a move like he sits there lost and makes moves before he thinks, he doesn’t understand why Danny took advantage of the fact that Billy was blacking out, but at the same time he himself (Billy) didn’t even have to the sense to fully understand why he had gone and why he not Danny is the one half pasting out (fainting) on a half full train, Billy doesn’t think about the consequences or the day after tomorrow like most people he thinks about now and right then.

I do not have a favorite line fro the story but the story was not touching but a lesson learned story and it tells you what you love and what you do and have to stand for in life. The story shows that some people do not like some of the things that you do but always know that no matter wha they do tey will always love you.

  10. “The kid who had bragged about getting a knockout skulked to a corner, slipped out of his trunks, and fumbled with the lacing on his groin protector, the grease still on his eyebrow where he’d been cut (page 31)”. This is my favorite sentence in the story because usually when people brag they end up getting defeated by their opponent. I also like how I could visualize the kid who bragged about getting knocked out skulking to the corner. The scene was so clear in my mind. The mental play of the scene is what made this favorite sentence in the book.

  11. My favorite line from the story is “ He found Johnnie Mae’s hand and held it. Even in her sleep she took his hand and held it gently.” These line are found on page 38. These are my favorite lines because the short story Fighter was basically about a man who feels like he needs to fight in order to get by, but at the end of the day he loses the fight and the line explains the love and happiness that his family gives him!!!

  12. Directions: Choose your favorite line from the story. Explain what it means and why you chose it.

One line that stands out to me is “Learning for him had always been hard, like catching water in his bare hands, it would all slip through”. To me it means that not all things are easy to obtain. You need to put hard work to succeed. You can’t succeed without learning. This is what I think it means to me.

  13. “He needed that squeeze, that gentleness, the knowing that the gentleness would always be there, that through all the nights of pain to come, she would be there for him.” This line really stood out to me during the story, because I kind of felt that love that him and Jonnie Mae shared. I know that him and Jonnie Mae’s love is real and that she is forgiving. I know that Billy feels like its his responsibility to make sure Jonnie Mae’s dreams come true but all he really has to do is stand by her, like she will stand by him. That is real love, and one day I want t be able to love somebody like Jonnie Mae loves Billy.

  14. I don’t have a favorite quote. Something that stands out to me is when Billy is with his wife and he is describing the way she feels when he gets home from the fight. What Billy had said was “ he found Johnnie Mae hand and held it. Even in her sleep she took his hand and squeezed it gently. He needed that squeeze, that gentleness, the knowing that the gentleness would always be there, that through all the night of pain to come, she would be there for him. He closed and hoped he wouldn’t dream”. I thought that this quote was interesting because its tilling use how a man feels when he is with the love of his life that’s what I think.

  15. One line that stood out to me was “His vision was double” (pg.36). This line means that he got knocked out so bad that every thing that he looks at looks like it is double. I choose this line because this reminded me of when I was 10 and my older cousin got into a fight and he got knocked out and he was seeing double as well.

  16. My favorite line from the story was "I love you, baby" on page 38. It is what Johnnie Mae said to her husband, Billy when he came in late from fighting and lost. I chose this line because i thought it was sweet. i really don't know, but i wanted something in quotes and that's the quote that i kind of liked.

My favorite line from the story was “The kid who had bragged about getting a knockout skulked to a corner, slipped out of his trunks, and fumbled with the lacing on his groin protector, the grease still on his eyebrow where he’d been cut.” This line stands out to me because it was funny how you can brag about something that you are not sure of and it totally goes wrong and then you just stand there and look completely stupid. I chose this line because I think that it was funny how he was bragging about losing the fight and then he lost badly. I also chose this line because I can see a clear image of how the kid looks and I can just see him bragging and then when he got in the fight he lost. He was probably saying to himself “Dang! I spoke too soon.”
    Pg. 31 at the bottom

  18. In the story the line that stood out to me the most was when he was “entering the ring and the crowd looking at him wondering what he was made of judging him by his swagger by the expression on his face and his show off”. The reason why that line stood out to me is because that is what most people do now of days they judge you by your swagger and the way your style is like. If you are doing something with competition, they see where you confidence level is

  19. My favorite line of the story is the ‘’knowing that the gentleness would always be there, that through all of the night of pain to come, she would be there for him. He closed his eyes and hoped he wouldn’t dream’’. (pg.38) What that line meant to me is that Jonnie Mae still has loves for her man and she would do anything for her man. I chose this line because it was passionate, it sounded like a poem, it was real, and I know that that Billy feels what she had to say.

  20. My favorite line of the story is “ He closed his eyes and hoped he wouldn’t dream.” Because in the story I understand that whatever happened that day he would not remember. When something big happens one day, that same night you most likely would dream about that event. He has never lost something so it made him want to forget and he did not want to dream about it. That is why that is my favorite line of the story because I think it was cleverly thought out. The author really does know what he is writing about because he thinks about each line.

  21. “ He needed that squeeze, that gentleness, the knowing that the gentleness would always be there, that through all the nights of pain to come, she would be there for him. He closed his eyes and hoped he wouldn’t dream.”
    ( pg. 38)
This is one of my favorite sentences and that stood out to me because one this shows what type of relationship Billy and his wife have. Another thing is that I think this is so sweet and it shows how the wife feels about Billy and that she loves him a lot. Even though Billy was doing crazy and stupid things his wife has his back.

  22. I really did not like one specific line from the story but there was one that stood out to me. I was at the end it said, “He found Johnnie Mae’s hand and held it. Even in her sleep she took his hand and squeezed it gently. (pg:38)” It shows that even when she told him to not fight when he came home and was sad. She still showed that she loved him no matter what come along.
